Sunday, December 17, 2006 Purpose of Life The meaning of life. To live, to love, to learn. To do good while here. If only small everyday deeds of kindness. In the end, to get out of it all as unscathed as possible. Knowing in your heart and soul, that you did your best. And as you stated. With your dignity intact.Be a moral, law abiding, ethical, and upstanding individual. You will then have a wonderful, sastifying life. Full of meaning, and personal satisfaction. No matter what happens to disrupt your world. Knowing in your heart, that you are good and true. Will give you the strength to carry on What is the "meaning" of a sunset? These things have no "meaning".Meaning" is what the left side of your brain craves. It wants to apply labels and meanings to everything it experiences. Unfortunately, by doing so it actually loses that experience and replaces it with "meaning".The rights side of the brain? It doesn't care. It just enjoys these things. It experiences life for what it is.The meaning of life? Life is actually just a bunch of protoplasm with the urge to continue and multiply. If life has to have "meaning", it's up to you to supply that. Going back to the most basic of all philosophies and the basis for all of existance in both animals and humans, the meaning of life is to reproduce and flourish. Humans are the only creatures (found) to think philosophically and analytically, but when it comes down to it, we're still just a species among millions and billions on this earth. The point of every other species on the planet is to reproduce and pass their dna to the next generation, so what's different with humans?Of course, the question is then WHY is that the point of all species....What is different about humans is that they alone know that the point of every species is to reproduce itself. I doubt either ants, antelopes or armadillos understand the point of what they are doing. This certainly points out that whatever meaning may exist in the world is specifically human meaning, and is what distinguishes a piece of land from a field of corn. Outside of an immediate if/then scheme common to many higher mammals, it seems only man conceives of a future (as possibility, for example). I think life does not, and cannot have meaning. Meaning is an idea that is conveyed through the existance of the...er...conveyer. Words, art, music, thoughts...those can have meaning. The word "life" has meaning. Things like windows, stars, fingernails, snails, and air have purpose. I believe what we are really wondering is what is the purpose of life. This can be looked at from either a scientific or a religious perspective. Scientificly, the prupose of life is to continue the existance of one's species, as stated above. Religiously, it can either be to serve God , Jesus, Mohammed , Rama , Buddha.etc., honor your ancestors...whatever your religion requires. EDIT: Continuing here... I think religion came from the question "what is the meaning of life". People wanted life to have more than a reason. They wanted it to have higher value, hence God/gods, afterlife, saviors, heroes, and the like were created to satisfy this desire. I'm not saying all that stuff doesn't exist, I'm just thinking very scientifically at the moment. For others, it is neither. They do not know or care. They know they are alive, that they want to be alive, and what they need to do to continue to be alive (I find myself in this position quite often). The conclusion would be that we've never been asking the right question There might very well be something even if this universe had never been, right now outside this universe, or after it stops being, but nothing is not something. 7:33:31 AM Posted By kamal k Comments (2) Personals Comments kalpena Sunday, December 17, 2006 11:43:41 AM life has no purpose we create purpose K.Venugopal Monday, December 18, 2006 9:56:59 PM The purpose of life is to enjoy it. |
